“Empathy is knowing how to finish another person’s sentence and not.”

True empathy does not try to fix. True empathy is to embrace another with an understanding of their perspective. It is a beautiful communication of understanding and joining. Empathy invites us out of ourselves and into an emotional and spiritual relationship.

True empathy can take away the sting of loneness.

Emanuel is a term that means “God is with us.” In being with us, God does not remove our responsibility to live, choose, and act. We are created with freedom; beautiful, scary, awesome freedom. Our daily, even momentary choices are an exercise of this freedom. What is lovely is that we are created in God’s own image, and in our choices we can choose to create.

For centuries, prayer has been used as a tool of empathy. In the humble surrender to God, to our interconnected web of relationship and love, we offer ourselves, our vulnerability and our spiritual connection with the needs and concern around us.

Best of all, God is with us. We are not alone.
