Julie and Julia

I was planning on writing about our recent snowfall here but I ended up watching Julie and Julia tonight on my (AWESOME) new Netflix account (thanks to my great brother!). I have a few thoughts...

1. I liked the movie better than the book. This never happens. To me food and cooking is so visual that the book really didn't do it for me. I had a hard time really connecting with the characters and just couldn't "get into it".

2. Meryl Streep as Julia Child is genius.

3. The end pissed me off. I wanted them to meet! I don't care if it never happened in real life, I wanted it to happen in the movie! I'm left thinking that Julia hated Julie and I don't like that!

4. I want to cook some of these recipes...they look DIVINE.

5. I miss cooking. To provide your loved ones or yourself with a delicious meal is a great feeling. Plus it is relaxing (minus the cleanup work).

Did you guys read the book or watch the movie? What were your thoughts?

Weekly Devotional...

My work is kind of cool in that they e-mail out weekly devotionals. I loved this week's and wanted to share with you...

“We’ll Have Snow…”

" It has snowed three times this December, and I live in North Carolina. Thankfully, only the one storm with ice has made much impact on travelers. But each event of watching white flakes form and fall from the sky has affected me. My son, also entranced by the spectacle, has had an interesting three-year-old interpretation. He runs to a window, jumps up and down, runs back to a parent, and says, “It is snowing. It is Christmas Eve!” He may have read or seen too many stories about flakes beginning to fall just as the characters understand how special family and friends are as we honor Jesus’ birth. His brain links snow with Christmas Eve.

In my childhood, I was more likely to link an impromptu, short-sleeved flag football game with Christmas Eve. I never saw snow in December. I rarely saw snow, period.

Snow has an amazing quieting effect. I generally long for a mug of something warm, a window with a view, a woolen blanket wrapped around me, and the time to watch the flakes fall when it snows. My worries drift somewhere else. My concerns about what needs to happen next silently disappear stage right. And my sense that I am in control of the universe, and doing a so-so job, falls from me as white flakes stick to white, and a blanket of crispness can be seen wherever my eyes fall. Life feels simpler and clearer and cleaner during a snow shower. Winter draws me into a safe place to reflect, wonder, and wait.

Tomorrow is the Winter Solstice, the longest night/ shortest day of the year. Friday, my son will finally get an affirmative response to his daily question, “Is it Christmas Eve?” And Saturday, we will celebrate how the birth of Jesus changed our lives and the entire world. We will be asked to reflect and wonder on the ways love bursts into our lives. As for me, love falls in my life like soft flakes of snow, surprising me with the way it stills me, calms me, and assures me that all will be well. May we all be in a warm and safe place, at least in spirit, where we can reflect, wonder, and wait on Christmas Day and whenever possible this winter season."

Blessings to us, one and all,

Evil Cookies.

Do you have a Trader Joe's where you live?

Well don't go there. Ever.

Well at least for a few months.

What? You must go to Trader's for your wine and food? Alright then but stay away from the cookies.

These are the most evil cookies on the planet. They are 100 times better than Oreo's and their filling is real and creamy and candy caney and DELICIOUS. Oh dear lord!!

You will eat them all. The whole entire box. I am not kidding.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THERE IS CANDY CANE JOE JOE'S ICE CREAM. OH GOD. WILL IT EVER END?

Sorry, I have to go buy some of this now. See you when I gain 20 lbs.

Party Baked Brie

baked-brie-a

From Simply Recipes.

You'll need:
-A round of brie
-A sheet of puff pastry
-Raspberry Jam
-Brown Sugar
-Maple Syrup
-Crackers and apples for serving

1. Thaw out your puff pastry and lay flat
2. Spread Jam and put brie on top...top with more jam
3. Wrap the brie up into a nice little package and turn over so smooth side is up
4. Top with brown sugar and a drizzle of maple syrup.
5. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown
6. Let cool 10 minutes then serve.

The party part is the brown sugar and syrup but it's super simple and delicious to do just the jam!

Perspective.

I am not good with decisions. I can't even pick a restaurant for dinner let alone my major life decisions. I am trying to make some life decisions and have been stressed, almost to the point of being sick about it. Then...I realized that the decision I was so stressed about wasn't the end of the world. Whichever way I chose to go the world would go on and in a few months or a year it wouldn't matter at all. Whichever way I decide to go, it isn't the end, there are always other options. I just think it can be tough to put things in perspective and perspective is something I definitely need!

Resilience..

“Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it’s less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you’ve lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that’s good.”
